How to Spot a Fake vs Genuine Phone in Kenya (2026)

How to Spot a Fake vs Genuine Phone in Kenya (2026)

Counterfeit phones are a serious problem in Kenya. They look like the real thing but have poor performance, bad batteries, and no warranty. Here's how to protect yourself.

1. Check the IMEI Number

Dial *#06# on the phone. You'll get a 15-digit IMEI. Go to imei.info and enter it. A genuine phone will show the correct brand and model.

2. Inspect Build Quality

Fake phones often have misaligned buttons, rough seams, and cheap plastic. Compare with official photos from the manufacturer.

3. Test the Software

Fake Androids often run a skin that looks like the real OS but has lag and missing features. Try to update the software – a fake won't connect to official update servers.

4. Buy from Trusted Sellers Only

Always buy from ACECORE, Safaricom shops, or authorised dealers. Avoid "too good to be true" prices on Facebook Marketplace.

What to Do If You Bought a Fake Phone

Report the seller to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) and demand a refund.
